You've probably already guessed it - it's the FEAR of "being alone"
Here's the crazy part of this question...if that person conquered their fear of "being alone" the result is actually the opposite - you're never lonely. Over the many years, I've had the opportunity to meet many individuals that have overcome "hardships" and turned their lives around. Their fear of "being alone" and sticking around a bad environment, immediately turned around to a new life, of building beautiful memories with that person they see every morning...
...that reflection in the mirror.
